Is a Dermal Filler or Botox® Right for Me?
Everyone has that one thing they would change on their bodies if they could. Sometimes, it’s a random wrinkle. Other times it’s a bottom lip that could use just a touch of volume. Dermal fillers and Botox® can help.
Injections are not about perfection, but enhancing those areas you see first in the mirror. It’s about enhancing your natural beauty, so you can hold your head high.
When you visit Elevado Aesthetics Spa for the first time, we’ll discuss your goals and health history to determine if a dermal filler or Botox® treatment is right for you.
Who Isn’t a Candidate for Dermal Fillers or Botox®?
Dermal fillers and Botox® are not for everyone. Women who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding should avoid both treatment options. You should also avoid Botox® if you:
- Have an allergy to any component of a neurotoxin, including an egg allergy
- Have generalized impairment of muscle strength (Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, ALS)
- Have antibiotic therapy shortly before or after treatment
- Have a planned Lasik eye surgery
- Had treatment involving ASA, NSAIDs, fish oil or anticoagulants one week before treatment
- Have any infections of the eyelids or other intended injection sites
- Have serious pre-existing conditions
You should avoid dermal fillers such as Juvéderm Volbella™ if you:
- Have had a serious reaction to hyaluronic acid derivatives
- Have a history of anaphylactic reactions
- Have multiple severe allergies
- Have a history of hypertrophic or keloid scars
- Have active inflammation at the site to be treated
- Have an important social function in the next 72 hours
- Take supplements such as ginger, ginkgo or fish oil
Does a Dermal Filler or Botox® Hurt?
Although some discomfort is normal for some patients, you shouldn’t feel any pain. At Elevado Aesthetics Spa, we use a topical anesthetic to numb your skin before treatment.
After treatment, you may experience some swelling, redness or tenderness at the injection site. These symptoms should fade away quickly. If you experience lasting symptoms, please give us a call.
What Is the Aftercare Like After an Injection?
After your treatment, you’ll need to ice the area frequently for the remainder of the day. And you should only take NSAIDs such as ibuprofen after treatment if necessary for pain and swelling.
You may require touch-ups to reach your goals. We will reassess the area after two weeks when the swelling and bruising have diminished.
Botox® FAQs
What Is Botox®?
Botox® isn’t a dermal filler. It’s a neurotoxin that blocks signals from your nerves to your muscles. This causes the injected muscle to relax, which results in the softening of wrinkles.
Botox® was the first neurotoxin available on the market and has the most data and available results. It’s also highly effective.
Where Can Botox® Be Used?
Botox® can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Some of the injectable areas include:
- Frown lines
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Chin to prevent dimpling
- Lip lines around the mouth
What Are the Potential Side Effects of Botox®?
Just like any other medical therapy, Botox® has potential side effects such as pain, swelling, bruising, drooping eyelids or eyebrows, flu-like symptoms, headache, voice hoarseness and unusual muscle weakness. If you experience any of these symptoms, please reach out to your doctor or call our office immediately.
Juvéderm® Volbella™ FAQs
What Is Juvéderm®?
Unlike Botox®, Juvéderm® is a dermal filler made with synthetic hyaluronic acid (HA). This is a substance that occurs naturally in your body, so it’s easily accepted and absorbed over time. Plus, it contributes to the production of collagen, a protein that helps keep your skin healthy.
Where Can Juvéderm® Volbella™ Be Used?
Juvéderm® Volbella™ is specifically used for lip enhancements, including reducing fine lines and wrinkles around the lips and increasing lip volume.
What Are the Potential Side Effects of Juvéderm® Volbella™?
The most common side effects of Juvéderm® Volbella™ include the injection site. You should be on the lookout for redness, firmness, swelling, lumps or bumps, itching and discoloration. While these side effects typically resolve on their own, you should call us with any concerns.
